7 Ways to Treat Digital Eye Strain: Clinical Approaches That Work and Those to Avoid

Staring at screens for hours has become unavoidable in modern work and life, but the resulting eye strain doesn't have to be permanent. This article breaks down seven clinical approaches to managing digital eye strain, separating effective treatments from common misconceptions. Insights from ophthalmologists and optometrists reveal which methods actually provide relief and which ones waste your time.

Assess Symptoms Beyond Device Time

Digital eye strain has become a much more common complaint, and my approach has changed with it. I no longer look at screen time alone. During an examination, I also consider how the patient works on their screen, their blinking pattern, lighting, viewing distance, prescription, and whether dry eye is contributing to the symptoms. That usually gives me a better idea of what actually needs to change.

I have also stopped routinely recommending blue-light-blocking glasses for this problem. They may be comfortable for some patients, but I don't consider them a primary treatment for digital eye strain. Instead, I focus on regular breaks, blinking more often, keeping the screen at a comfortable distance, and treating dry eye when necessary. The American Academy of Ophthalmology also recommends practical measures such as the 20-20-20 rule and addressing dry eye symptoms.

Favor Practical Daily Adjustments

Digital eye strain has become a much more common part of my conversations with patients because so many people now spend most of their day looking at screens. Over time, I've moved away from treating it as simply a "screen time" problem. I now pay more attention to what is actually causing the discomfort, like reduced blinking, dry eyes, poor lighting, an uncomfortable viewing distance, or an underlying eye condition.

One thing I've stopped recommending is simply telling patients to "use their screens less." It's often not realistic, especially when screens are part of their work. Instead, I focus on practical changes they can actually maintain, such as taking regular breaks, blinking more often, adjusting screen position and lighting, and addressing dry eye when it's contributing to the symptoms. I've found that patients are much more likely to follow advice when it fits into their normal routine rather than asking them to avoid something they depend on every day.

Use Preservative-Free Artificial Tears

Preservative-free artificial tears can ease the burning, gritty feeling caused by screen-related dryness. Screen use often lowers the number of full blinks, so the tear layer evaporates faster. Preservative-free drops may be a good choice when drops are needed often because they are less likely to irritate sensitive eyes.

They do not fix every cause of eye discomfort, especially pain, redness, or vision loss. Frequent use should be discussed with an eye care professional if symptoms continue. Ask an eye doctor or pharmacist which preservative-free tear product fits your needs.

Practice Complete Blinks

Complete blinking helps spread tears evenly across the surface of the eye. Many people blink less often or only partly while reading, gaming, or working on a screen. A partial blink leaves areas of the eye exposed and can worsen dryness and blurred vision.

Pausing briefly to close the eyes gently and fully can support a healthier tear layer. This simple habit works best when it is practiced throughout the day rather than only after discomfort begins. Start adding full blinks during your next screen session.

Optimize Monitor Placement and Lighting

Screen placement and lighting can reduce the effort needed to focus comfortably. A monitor placed slightly below eye level may help keep the eyes more naturally open and reduce tear evaporation. Keeping the screen at a comfortable distance can also limit squinting and neck strain.

Bright glare from windows, lamps, or reflections may make eye discomfort worse. Adjusting the room light and screen brightness so they feel balanced can improve comfort. Reposition your screen and reduce glare today.

Question Supplement Marketing Claims

Supplements sold specifically for digital eye strain often promise more than the evidence supports. Vitamins and herbal products may be useful for certain diagnosed health conditions, but they are not proven cures for ordinary screen-related discomfort. Marketing claims can distract from practical steps such as correcting vision, reducing glare, and treating dryness.

Some products can also interact with medicines or be unsafe at high doses. A clinician can help determine whether a supplement is needed for a specific medical reason. Check with an eye care professional before buying an eye-strain supplement.

Update Prescriptions Before Blue-Light Filters

An up-to-date eye examination can identify vision problems that make screen work harder. Small amounts of farsightedness, astigmatism, or focusing difficulty may cause headaches, fatigue, and blurry text. Proper glasses or contact lens correction can reduce the strain created by constant refocusing.

Blue-light filters are not a substitute for correcting an unaddressed vision prescription. Sudden changes in vision, double vision, or ongoing pain need prompt professional assessment. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam if screen symptoms keep returning.
